Who wants to try typical Balinese food? The most famous traditional market in eastern Bali! Gianyar night market (Pasar Senggol Gianyar is what locals call this night scene) would have to be the place! Located about 30 minutes from central Ubud.
Experience the true aspect of local life and enjoy a cheap and very tasty meal prepared in front of you, this is the place to go. The night markets have food stall after food stall lined up along the walkway that runs alongside the road. Try some traditional favourites or pick something completely new! Also these markets have everything from clothing, homewares, and toys to the fantastic food stalls serving all types of local food and it’s so much cheaper than your usual touristy markets!
Plenty of venders who will provide a huge plate of meat for very little money! You will see the locals eating with their hands rather than utensils. It’s very cool to feel like you’re part of the day to day life of the locals, seeing how they live, bargaining like they do, and eating what they eat. You see more locals than tourists at this market, which is great! It’s best to get there early, around 5.30pm, because the food is freshest at that time. Then fill your belly full of Bali’s favourites such as Babi Guling (Roast Suckling Pig), Bakso (Meatball Soup), Nasi Goreng (Fried Rice), Chicken and Lamb Satay, and many more!

Gianyar Night Market is open every day, but it gets particularly crowded on weekends. Start around 3pm until 11pm. Bring enough cash since that’s how the transactions are done here.This market is for locals and not set up for tourists so set your expectations accordingly. Knowing a little bit about the food and the names does help, as tourists are rarely here. So be prepared to be an attraction as a foreign tourist. This place is authentic for now, enjoy the calm before the tourist storm.
